9.2 The Conversion of Ethylene

At first sight, the conversion of ethylene is quite constant at around 95%, and often very little importance is attached to it. However, small variations in the ethylene conversion effect a great influence on the ratios of hydrogen and 1-hexene to ethylene in the reactor, and thus on the quality of the product, even on the stability of the reactor operation. Since the conversion of ethylene is most strongly influenced by the ethylene concentration itself, one of the important rules of operation of an HDPE slurry loop reactor is to keep the ethylene concentration, and thus the ethylene conversion, well under control and as constant as possible.
